Kafunta River Lodge is beautiful. We had a very large room (mostly tent with walls of windows overlooking the grasslands beyond).
And a huge shower.
We are in a compound separate from the rest of the camp. There are two suites with a living room between and a separate cabin. Tara is in a cabin just outside of our compound. There is a huge deck overlooking the grasslands and a large swimming pool. All the comforts of home.
The camp at night.
One of our lunch buffets with homemade bread.
Our safari this morning is headed out to the national park across the river.
In order to cross the river we had to take a ferry. The compound for the ferry staff.
The entrance to the ferry was down a steep incline that was carved into the riverbank.
The small ferry was powered by three men who used specially carved wooden “clubs” to pull on the steel cable spanning the river.
Some photos of
the Luangwa River taken over the week while we were in South Luangwa National
Park.
During several
drives we saw fishermen on the river.
The other side of the river was a vast sandy flood plain that we had to cross before getting to the bush. The sand is deep and the crossing took a lot of skill on the part of the driver.
Hippos tracks in the sand…
and a hippo “highway” across the flood plain.
The first game drive we had an incredible leopard sighting. Leopards are usually nocturnal, shy and hard to find. Fortunately, our guide has great eyes and found this lady hiding in the bush. She was eyeing a herd of pukus (small antelope) nearby. Leopards are not built for the chase. They have to get within about 10 feet of an animal before they can effectively pounce for the kill. She was a long way from the herd.
The guide also found her later in the day…much more well hidden but he was still able to find her.
