This morning we had a tour of the Royal Village of Mukuni. The village has a population of about 7,000 and was established in the 13th century. It is the capital of the Mukuni chiefdome with over 100 other villages comprising the chiefdom.
We visited a couple of homes. They each were within a large fence/wall.
At one of the homes we watched the man of the house working on crafts.
Crafts is a main occupation of the village. We were not allowed to buy directly from him. All of the crafts go to the local craft market where all of the artisans sell their wares and the money is shared by the community. At the end of the tour, we visited the local craft market to see the wide variety of crafts. Many of us bought items.
Our guide was very informative and we were touring a living community with real people going about their real lives.
During our tour we were treated to a group of drummers and dancers performing some of their traditional dances. With a lot of enthusiasm.
And the performance also drew a group of local children.
From here we went to the trail head of the trail out to Victoria Falls. Mary spent some time with Marvin and Cheryl doing some shopping in the craft market at the trailhead…
while Paul and the others took the hike out to see Victoria Falls a little closer. The walk to the falls.
The falls.
In the evening, we had a river safari that took us out on the Zambezi. We did see a reasonable amount of wildlife, mainly birds, on the cruise.
The route took us through some small cascades/rapids just upstream of the falls. Not too bumpy but fun.
Couple of photos at David Livingstone Lodge.
Another beautiful sunset.
