Aug 21 – Potato Bush Camp, Lower Zambezi National Park, Zambia

This morning, we packed up and headed back to Kasane airport where we caught a flight to Lusaka and then a bush plane...

to Jeki air strip.  There we were met by our next guide.  They loaded us into a safari vehicle and about 10 minutes later we pulled up to a small dock on the Zambezi River.  With all of our luggage we needed two boats.  The ride was about a half an hour to our next camp…Potato Bush.

Potato Bush’s sister camp, Sausage Tree, was right next door.  When asked about the decidedly non-African names they said that the owner wanted something easy to remember (African Names can be tricky).  There is a bush that smells like mashed potatoes and a tree, called the sausage tree, with huge, sausage shaped fruits that are a favorite of elephants, zebras and other animals.  So, they opted for these two names…also known as Bangers and Mash.

The camp is very small.  Our group of seven took all four bungalows in the camp.  But for its small size it gave us the largest bungalows we've had, river views, private plunge pools and regular visits by a mother elephant and her baby.  Some photos of our bungalow.

There were a lot of hippos in the river in front of the camp.

We had a beautiful sunset this evening overlooking the Zambezi River.
