Aug 23 – Potato Bush Camp, Lower Zambezi National Park, Zambia

We left early than usual this morning as we were headed to a far area where there are rare painted wild dogs.  Unfortunately, we never found them.  So we took a few photos from a magazine on tourism in Zambia.  At least we now know what they look like.

However, we did come across a group of bachelor lions who had just feasted on a Cape Buffalo.  They were stuffed and sleeping off their feast.

Another highlight was getting a good look at some kudus, a very large, woodland antelope.  We had seen some very briefly through heavy bush a few days ago.  But today we had a very good view.

A baboon with baby on board.

One unusual event…we had a flat tire during the morning safari.  The guide and spotter had it changed quickly.

And about 5 minutes out from the camp we had a second one.  All of the safari vehicles carry two spares.  These were our first flats.  They were most efficient in getting the tires change.  Apparently, they also do their own tire repairs.  It’s probably an ongoing job as the terrain is pretty rough on tire.

The evening safari was a boat safari on the Zambezi River.  A lovely experience.

A few animal photos including hippos.

The escarpment in the distance...a prominent feature in the area.

As we traveled along the riverbank we saw this majestic male common waterbuck watching us as we cruised by.

Eventually it was for the standard “night cap” and instead of having drinks on the boat they pulled up to where some camp staff had set up a small snack table, chairs and drinks for us.

A great way to end the day as we watched the sunset over the Zambezi.
