October 7 - We headed out at the ungodly hour of 4:00am for the long drive back to Fort Dauphin and our midmorning flight back to Antananarivo. Couple quick photos from the air.
We were back in a hotel by mid-day. We didn’t do anything the rest of the day but some computer work.
Oct 8 – Antananarivo City Tour
Mid-morning we were off on a city tour of Antananarivo. Random photos from the tour.
First stop was a beautiful, old train station. It is now used as an office building...it isn't needed as a station any more as the trains no longer run. The station and the railway system had been built by the French when Madagascar was a French colony.
In the parking lot of the train station was a small display of vintage cars.
Then we headed up the hill to visit the Queen’s Palace, only to discover that it was closed that day.
The palace is on a tall hill so we drove to a lookout so that we could have views of the city.
And there was an old church up there as well.
The taxis in town are all mostly a cream color and a huge percent of them are Citrons, Peugeots, and Renaults (all French makes) that look like they date from the 50’s when Madagascar was still a French colony.
City Hall.
We had lunch at a restaurant near a lake that is in town. We had nice views of the lake that was surrounded by jacaranda trees in bloom.
After lunch we took a drive out into the countryside to the Summer Palace.
Gate to the palace area.
